Garam masala is a traditional Indian blend of spices that is one of the basic spice mixes of Indian cookery. Every household and region has their own versions of garam masala. According to Ayurvedic texts only those spices that heat the body should be used, e.g. black cardamom , black pepper , cinnamon , nutmeg , black cumin , mace , cloves and bay leaves , since these are the hot spices or garam masala spices.
Steenbergs Organic Garam Masala is almost a sweet blend based around Punjabi recipes that lacks the characteristic "curry" notes of cumin , coriander and turmeric , making it a very versatile organic curry/spice blend. Steenbergs Organic Garam Masala comprises the sweet spice - cinnamon - and the pungent spices - caraway , cloves and cardamom powder . At Steenbergs we add some wonderful organic black pepper from organic growers in the Palghat region of Kerala in India to give it some bite. Then Axel Steenberg has used organic fennel seeds to bring the flavours together and add some anise tones to the blend.
Add this organic garam masala towards the end of cooking, as an interesting and subtle addition to a curry at the end, in daal or to spice up some vegetables, perfect for those wanting an Indian spice flavour without wanting any spice heat like a mild coconut curry.
